Blog #1: Industry Report

·       As you read about your industry, what did you find most interesting?

As I was reading about the industry, I found that the most interesting thing was how fast the industry has grown. Global pharmaceuticals sales have increased 11.6% in 2011, to over $956 billion, mainly driven by 28.6% growth in emerging markets. Sales in China alone have increased by a huge 62.3% in 2011, this reflects on the expanding middle class in china and the rise of standard of living. Also the expansion of the healthcare funding by the government has helped China. I found this interesting because I didn’t know that the industry was growing at this rate and is still expanding.

·       What questions do you now want to explore further in your project?

After reading the industry report I am very interested in learning how big of an impact the pharmaceuticals industry has on the global market? and what it would mean to the standard of living as a whole? how much does it affect the global economy? Because judging from the industry report it seems like it has a very big role.

·       What initial thoughts do you have about the future of this industry?

I feel like the future of this industry is bright and people will always be coming up with medicine to cures for new diseases. I don’t feel like this industry is in any danger to shut down as medicine and drugs are a necessity for us. As healthcare has become a big issue in the United States, I feel like it will prosper in the future in the U.S.

·       Share one interesting data point about your industry and/or assigned company.

My assigned company is Teva Pharmacueticals, and one interesting data point is that it has announced 2012 net revenues worth $20,317 million, up by 10.9 percent over last year, which was $18,312 million.

Industry Report: Brand Name Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in the US

·      As you read about your industry, what did you find most interesting?
What I found most interesting was that despite this being about brand named manufacturing I am not familiar with any of the names.  This is in sharp contrast with any other brand name industry that I would have at least heard of one of the most important ones.

·      What questions do you now want to explore further in your project?
I want to know if any of the drugs I take are actually produced by each of these companies.  More specifically what products do each of these companies make

·      What initial thoughts do you have about the future of this industry?
I think that this industry is going to stay pretty much the same.  The reason for this thought is that there will always be about the same need for medicine unless diseases are cured.

Industry Report: Generic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in the US

The Pharmaceutical Industry focuses on developing drug for human and no-human subjects.

I found it very interesting that the major demand industries are not only pharmacies and drug stores, but Cosmetic and Toiletry wholesaling as well. Moreover, further down the report, there is mention to the major products and services in the pharmaceutical industry are:
  • ·      Preparations for metabolic drugs and
  • ·      Preparations for cardiovascular drugs.
  • ·      Preparations for psychotherapeutic drugs

I found this very surprising; it is a direct result of the overweight issues the USA is faced with today, as well as the increase in depression diagnosis.

The US is considered to be a mixed economy. This occurs because the government takes charge of certain aspects, like Medicaid, but still leaves space for a free market. It would be interesting to analyze exactly how profitable this industry is and how much it contributes to the GDP.

Although I think the industry will not go extinct anytime in the foreseeable future (because we need medicine) I would like to understand if the future of the industry depends strictly on advances and discoveries that occur in the medical field.

Novo Nordisk is my assigned company. Their net profit reached $1.7 billion and shares were at $3.14 during the first half of 2012 because of different sales of insulin drugs like Victoza and Levemir (NJ.com). Unfortunately, their shares dropped last Monday after U.S Regulators asked for more information about a new insulin drug before deciding if the drug can put it on the market (The New York Times). It will be interesting to see how this pans out.
